The 12 Tribes of Israel explained: names, order and meaning
Who are the 12 tribes of Israel? The names of the 12 sons of Jacob in order, what each tribe received, why Levi had no land, and what Revelation 7 teaches — explained from the Bible.

The Perspective
**What are the 12 tribes of Israel?** They are the families descended from the twelve sons of Jacob, whom God renamed Israel (Genesis 32:28). Together they formed the people of Israel. Here are their names, their order and their meaning — straight from Scripture.
**The 12 sons of Israel in order of birth**
Genesis 29–30 and 35:16-18 give the birth order:
- **Reuben** — son of Leah
- **Simeon** — son of Leah
- **Levi** — son of Leah
- **Judah** — son of Leah
- **Dan** — son of Bilhah
- **Naphtali** — son of Bilhah
- **Gad** — son of Zilpah
- **Asher** — son of Zilpah
- **Issachar** — son of Leah
- **Zebulun** — son of Leah
- **Joseph** — son of Rachel
- **Benjamin** — son of Rachel
The official list of the sons is in Genesis 35:23-26.
**Why the tribal lists sometimes differ**
Jacob adopted Joseph's two sons, **Ephraim and Manasseh**, as his own (Genesis 48:5). So in the land division Joseph counts as two tribes. **Levi** received no territory, because "the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance" (Joshua 13:33); the Levites served as priests and received 48 cities among the other tribes (Numbers 35:7). That is why lists of the land still add up to twelve.
**Jacob's blessing: Genesis 49**
Before his death Jacob spoke over each son. The best known word is over Judah: "The scepter shall not depart from Judah … until Shiloh comes" (Genesis 49:10). From Judah came King David — and Jesus, "the Lion of the tribe of Judah" (Revelation 5:5).
**What happened to the 12 tribes?**
After King Solomon the kingdom split. The ten northern tribes were exiled by Assyria in 722 BC (2 Kings 17:6); Judah, Benjamin and many Levites remained in the south. Yet the Bible never treats the tribes as lost to God: Anna was "of the tribe of Asher" (Luke 2:36), Paul "of the tribe of Benjamin" (Philippians 3:5), and James writes "to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad" (James 1:1). Ezekiel 37:15-22 promises that God will make them one nation again.
**The 12 tribes in Revelation 7**
Revelation 7:4-8 names 12,000 sealed from each tribe. Judah is listed first; Dan and Ephraim are not named, while Joseph and Manasseh are. Scripture does not explain why, so GOD News does not speculate. Revelation 21:12 shows the names of the twelve tribes on the gates of the New Jerusalem.
