When a Baby said “mama”

I recently watched a video of two men with a baby. I don’t actually know whether the little one was adopted or whether there were other circumstances, so I won’t pretend I do. I can only respond to what I saw.

One of the fathers was encouraging the little one to say, “Dada” or “Pop.” But the baby repeatedly responded with, “Mama,” and each time he gently replied, “No, no… not Mama… Dada… Pop.”

Watching those few moments made me stop and think.

As a Christian, I believe God created children to have both a mother and a father. That has always been my conviction because it is the pattern we see from the very beginning of Scripture.

“So God created man in His own image… male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24

A mother’s love begins long before a child is born. God uniquely designed women to carry, nurture, and bond with their babies in a way that is truly remarkable. Fathers, too, have a unique and irreplaceable role in a child’s life. I believe God intended children to experience both.

At the same time, I also know that we live in a broken world. Many children grow up without one parent because of death, divorce, abandonment, illness, war, or many other painful circumstances. God’s original design isn’t always what people experience. Throughout Scripture we also see God’s heart for the fatherless, the vulnerable, and for those who lovingly care for them.

“A father of the fatherless and a defender of widows is God in His holy habitation.” Psalm 68:5

I have a very good friend whose two granddaughters have been in her care since the day they were born. Because of difficult circumstances, their mother was unable to raise them because she lived in another country and the girls were born here. The girls were not permitted to go with her, so their grandparents lovingly stepped in.

For more than eleven years they have poured out their lives for those precious girls. They have loved them, protected them, comforted them, provided for them, and given them a stable, nurturing home. To the girls, their grandmother is simply “Mama.”

That doesn’t change God’s design for the family. It simply shows what sacrificial love looks like when life doesn’t unfold the way it should.

When I watched this little one, my heart wasn’t drawn into an argument—it was drawn toward the child.

Every child deserves to be loved, protected, cherished, and given every opportunity to flourish because every child is created in the image of God.

As Christians, we can hold firmly to what we believe while still treating people with dignity, kindness, and respect. Jesus never compromised truth, but neither did He stop loving people.

Who knows? One day the Holy Spirit may draw both these fathers and this precious child to Jesus. I sincerely pray that they will come to know the love, grace, forgiveness, and salvation that are found in Him alone.

I believe God’s original design was for a child to have both a mother and a father. I do not deny that conviction. Yet I also know that every human being is made in the image of God, and every child deserves to be loved.

“He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8

At one point in our lives we all need Jesus to stay with us.Make the right choice. What if I told you that you could be saved? What if I told you that you could be changed? That all of the guilt and all of the shame And everything dirty could be washed away? Fully alive, fully redeemed Headed for heaven, forgiven and free? What if I told you it’s true? What would you do?
