Kathryn Kuhlman: her final days
Michel Bosman discusses the account handed down about Kathryn Kuhlman's final days. Source references distinguish historical context from hospital stories that have not been independently confirmed.

The Perspective
This article discusses an account that is retold in faith circles. The extraordinary hospital events below have not been independently verified by GOD News. The retellings consulted name no identifiable nurse and show no medical record, original witness statement or original note. Citing these stories proves that they are told; it does not prove that the events happened that way.
Historical context and the limits of the sources
On 22 February 1976 The New York Times published an obituary titled “Kathryn Kuhlman, Evangelist And Faith Healer, Dies in Tulsa”. The archive listing and publication date were checked, but the full text was not accessible during this review. We therefore use this reference only as the location of a contemporary obituary, not as evidence for the hospital details. Source 1: https://www.nytimes.com/1976/02/22/archives/kathryn-kuhlman-evangelist-and-faith-healer-dies-in-tulsa.html
Later religious retellings give 20 February 1976 as the date of her death. A piece on Inspirit Extra mentions an admission on 26 December 1975 to Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, open-heart surgery and a visit from Oral Roberts and his wife Evelyn. This is a later retelling, not a hospital document or a directly consulted statement from Roberts. The precise admission details and the conversation remain unconfirmed for this article. Part 1 — Unconfirmed tradition: going ‘home’
According to the account supplied, Kuhlman’s intense work and travel schedule had exhausted her physically. The claim that a serious heart condition had been diagnosed twenty years earlier, and the description of an enlarged heart, are not supported by original medical sources.
According to the later retelling, Oral and Evelyn Roberts came to her bedside to pray for her recovery. Kuhlman is said to have stopped them and pointed upward, as a sign that she wanted to go ‘home’. Source 2 retells this visit; GOD News has not been able to establish Roberts’s original statement.
Part 2 — Unconfirmed tradition: the nurse and the power cut
The account describes a young nurse working her first shift on the coronary intensive care unit. The unit is said to have had only two patients. Her name and an original witness statement are not available in the sources consulted.
According to the story, the heart monitor suddenly flatlined and the hospital’s electricity failed. Healed Nations Ministries and Heartstone Network retell such an event. No monitor record or independent report of the power failure was consulted. No medical or supernatural conclusion can be drawn from this description. Part 3 — Unconfirmed tradition: light, warmth and roses
The nurse is said to have gone to the room with a flashlight. The claim that a do-not-resuscitate policy applied has not been confirmed by a medical document.
The following phenomena belong to the tradition, not to independently established observations:
- Unconfirmed: a visible, peaceful light above the bed. Source 2 describes a glow but offers no verifiable original witness statement.
- Unconfirmed: notable bodily warmth after death. Sources 3 and 4 retell this without a medical record or measurements.
- Unconfirmed: a strong scent of roses with no flowers present. Sources 3 and 4 speak of a scent said to have reached several floors and an adjacent building. This reach has not been independently confirmed.
According to the account, a supervisor recorded the death at 1:13 a.m. and asked where the scent was coming from. The exact time of death has not been confirmed by a death certificate. Source 2 also mentions 8:20 p.m. in its retelling while quoting the 1:13 prediction; the times are inconsistent. We therefore do not present any exact time as established fact.
Part 4 — Unconfirmed tradition: the note and the funeral
According to the retellings, staff found a written prediction. Sources 3 and 4 attribute the following words to Kuhlman:
“I will die on February 20 at 1:13 a.m. Let there be only roses at my funeral.”
This is an attributed quotation from later retellings. GOD News has not consulted the original note, a traceable reproduction or the medical notation. The original reference [1] in the supplied manuscript had no corresponding source.
According to the account supplied, the nurse was deeply moved and her religious convictions changed. This too is not confirmed by an identifiable statement from her.
The story ends with a funeral in California, led by Oral Roberts and decorated only with roses. Who led the service and the claim that only roses were present have not been independently substantiated in this review.
Sources and accountability
Source 1 is a contemporary archive listing; the full article text was not consulted. Sources 2, 3 and 4 are later religious retellings, checked for what they themselves claim. They are not treated as three independent eyewitnesses: a common original source has not been established.
This article is a discussion of faith tradition. The absence of independent confirmation is not proof that something did not happen, but it prevents us from presenting these details as established history.
