Angels Are Real

What the Bible Teaches Children About God’s Angels

When children think of angels, they often imagine something very soft and sweet.

A little glowing figure. A pretty robe. Small wings. A gentle face in a picture book.

And while artwork can help us think about heavenly things, the angels in our drawings are not the full picture.

The Bible shows us something much greater.

Angels are real.

They are not pretend. They are not decorations. They are not just cute little characters in stories.

They are mighty beings created by God.

They belong to Him, they obey Him, they worship Him, and they serve Him.

Angels belong to God

God made angels.

He alone is their Creator, and they exist for His purposes.

The angels who belong to God are not wandering through heaven doing whatever they want. They are not independent. They are not equal to God.

They are His servants.

The Bible says:

“Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word!” Psalm 103:20

That tells us something beautiful:

Angels are mighty, but their might is always under God’s command.

They are strong, but they use their strength in obedience.

They are powerful, but their power is never separate from God.

Angels are not all the same

Just as human beings are different from one another, the Bible shows us that there are different kinds of angels with different tasks and even different appearances.

Some angels appear like men.

Some are messengers.

Some are warriors.

Some stand in the presence of God.

Some worship Him continually.

And some are described in ways so wonderful and unusual that they remind us heaven is far greater than anything we can easily imagine.

The Bible speaks about seraphim, who cry:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” Isaiah 6:3

What a picture that gives us.

The seraphim are not casual about God.

They are filled with awe.

They worship Him for who He is.

And in Revelation we are again given a glimpse of heavenly worship:

“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” Revelation 4:8

The Bible describes this worship as continuing without rest. We speak of it as “day and night,” even though heaven is not limited the way life on earth is.

The point is this:

God is always worthy of worship, and His heavenly servants never stop praising Him.

Angels stayed loyal to God

Not all angels remained faithful.

The Bible teaches that some rebelled against God.

But the angels who serve God now are the ones who remained loyal to Him.

They did not turn away.

They did not abandon Him.

They belong to the one true God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — and they gladly serve Him.

They love His will.

They rejoice in His holiness.

They delight in obedience.

And that too is a lesson for us.

The holy angels do not try to take God’s place.

They point to Him.

Angels have different tasks

The Bible shows us that angels are given different assignments by God.

Some bring messages.

Gabriel is one of the named angels in Scripture. He was sent by God to bring important messages, including the announcement of the births of John the Baptist and Jesus.

Some angels protect or fight in ways God appoints.

Michael is specifically called the archangel and is shown in Scripture as a mighty servant of God.

And some worship God continually before His throne.

So children can learn this simple truth:

God’s angels are not all the same, but they all serve the same Lord.

Do angels help God’s people?

Yes — the Bible teaches that God does send help through His angels.

Hebrews says:

“Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” Hebrews 1:14

That means angels are servants of God, and God may send them to help His people.

But we must remember something important:

We do not pray to angels.

We do not trust in angels.

We do not ask angels to take God’s place.

We ask God for help.

And God, in His wisdom and love, may send whatever help He chooses — including the help of His angels.

So the comfort for a child is not:

“Angels are there if I can get their attention.”

The comfort is:

“God is always able to help me, and He can send His angels if He wills.”

Angels are wonderful — but God is greater

The Bible never teaches us to become fascinated with angels for their own sake.

It teaches us to stand in wonder of God.

Angels are wonderful because they show us something about the greatness of the One they serve.

Their obedience shows us His authority.

Their worship shows us His holiness.

Their strength shows us His power.

Their service shows us His care.

So when we see angels in artwork, we can enjoy the beauty of it. But we should also remember:

Real angels are not just cute little figures with wings.

They are real, mighty, holy servants of God.

And best of all, they remind us that the God we love is glorious beyond anything we can imagine.

Five truths for children to remember

• Angels are real.

• God created them.

• They are mighty and obedient to God.

• There are different kinds of angels with different tasks.

• We ask God for help, and He may send His angels as part of His care.

And perhaps the most important truth of all:

Angels are servants. God is Lord.
